Scandinavian Dining Chair: PP Shell, Beech Legs or Upholstered? How to Choose in 2026

Nordika Scandinavian chair with beech legs and Wish wooden chair with cord seat, Deko District

In short. A Scandinavian dining chair comes in three families. The moulded polypropylene (PP) shell on wooden legs is the cheapest and the easiest to clean: from €34.90 at Deko District. The upholstered chair in fabric, velvet or bouclé is warmer and more comfortable for long meals: from €54.90. The all-wood chair with a woven cord seat is the most traditional and the most expensive: €129.90 for the Wish chair. For a family kitchen, choose a PP shell. For a dining room where meals last, choose an upholstered seat.

Prices updated in October 2026.

PP shell: the cheapest and the easiest to clean

Nordika Scandinavian chair, matt PP shell and solid beech legs

The moulded shell on four wooden legs is the chair most people picture when they think "Scandinavian". The shell wipes clean, which makes it the safe choice with children.

  • Denisse (€34.90): PP seat, soft faux leather cushion and solid wood legs. The product page lists it for the dining room, the living room or a covered terrace. 16 colours in stock, from white to fuchsia.
  • Nordika (€39.90): matt PP shell, solid beech legs joined by a black steel frame. Two versions, light legs (15 colours) or dark legs (13 colours). The product page also suggests it as a desk chair.
  • Denisse beech (€42.90): same silhouette as Denisse with beech legs, 16 colours.

The difference between Denisse and Nordika: Denisse has a cushion on the seat, Nordika has a bare matt shell and a steel frame between the legs.

With armrests: Dominic and Nordika bouclé

Dominic (€47.90, 13 colours) keeps the PP shell and adds armrests, on interlaced wooden legs. It suits the two ends of a table. The Nordika bouclé chair (€54.90, white) has a wraparound bouclé seat with armrests on a light wood and black steel base, for a dining room, a desk or a waiting room according to its product page.

Upholstered: fabric or velvet for long meals

Evelyne Scandinavian dining chair upholstered in fabric
  • Evelyne fabric (€59.90): soft fabric cover, metal legs and a wooden base, 15 colours from cream to dark blue.
  • Evelyne velvet (€59.90): velvet seat, metal legs with a wood-effect finish, 10 colours. The product page also lists it for restaurants and hotels.
  • Alene (€84.90): velvet seat, back and low armrests, slightly splayed legs in black powder-coated metal tube, 6 colours.

Fabric and velvet need more care than a PP shell: regular vacuuming and quick spot cleaning. For a detailed comparison, see our guide to affordable designer dining chairs.

Solid wood and cord: the Wish chair

Wish Scandinavian wooden chair with woven cord seat

The Wish chair (€129.90) follows the CW24 design dated 1950 on its product page, also known as the Danish chair. Its Y-shaped back and curves support the back, and its seat is woven cord. 3 finishes are in stock: black, natural wood and white. It is the most expensive of the selection and the one closest to traditional Scandinavian design.
