At what height to hang a wall light

There is no single rule, but these guidelines are commonly used. Check them on site before drilling.

  • Living room and hallway: around 150 to 180 cm from the floor, so the light source sits roughly at eye level without dazzling.
  • Bedside: lower, so the light falls on the book; sit up in bed and place the lamp just above shoulder height. An adjustable shade (Livel, Narn, George B3, the reading lamp) makes this easier.
  • Stair or corridor: several identical wall lights at the same height, spaced evenly, give a more regular light than a single fitting.

Which wall light for which use

  • Reading in bed: Livel (€41.72, adjustable shade, 26 cm high), the adjustable reading lamp (€49.20, swan-neck arm, 49 cm), Narn (€76, foldable asymmetric shade designed for reading according to its page) and George B3 (€120, steel arm that reaches 93 cm towards the room). Rubi (€58.90) is also suggested as a bedside lamp on its page.
  • Soft background light: Hernel 50 cm (€36) and 80 cm (€44) are aluminium sticks with built-in LEDs; the 80 cm version gives 9 W at 3000 K, a warm white. Bim (€126) has a bell-shaped smoked glass shade with an LED.
  • Small budget: Bruno (€16, metal and wood, black or white), Cowbell (€28.80, black shade on a wooden bar with a brown strap) and Dena (€32.90, fabric shade on a black metal stem, 46 cm high).
  • Decorative piece: Scarlet (€40, glass shade hanging from a gold bracket, in green, black or amber) and Simian (€99.90, a monkey in matt resin, 79 cm high).

Bulbs and installation

  • Bulb: Hernel and Bim have a built-in LED. For Bruno, Cowbell, Dena, Scarlet, Rubi, Simian and George B3, the page states that the bulb is not included; check the socket (E27 or E14) before buying one.
  • Wiring: Simian is the only model whose page mentions a long cable with a plug and a switch. For the others, the pages do not say whether the lamp plugs in; plan a wall connection, done by a qualified electrician if needed.
  • Space: George B3 extends up to 93 cm from the wall and Simian is 51.5 cm wide; leave room around them.
